Captain Andy at the helm for a Coastal Wildlife Cruise

One of Ketchikan’s most beloved wildlife experiences, this coastal cruise takes passengers into the wild aboard a custom-built, high-speed vessel designed specifically for wildlife viewing. Black bears, bald eagles, harbor seals, sea lions, and humpback and killer whales are all on the radar.

Bears emerge from the treeline in May and June to forage on beach grass, berries, and crabs, and return in late July through September to feed on salmon. Eagles and seals fish the inlet waters throughout the season. En route, approximately 30 minutes are dedicated to open-water wildlife watching, where whales, porpoise, and sea lions frequently appear as they follow migrating schools of herring and salmon. In 2026, the tour is guided by the well-known Captain Andy, a seasoned local naturalist who brings Ketchikan’s coastal ecosystem to life. The excursion concludes downtown with a short walk back to the pier.
