For visitors who want to trade the cruise ship crowds for mud, mountains, and smoked reindeer sausage, this UTV adventure into the Tongass National Forest delivers. The trail winds more than 5 miles each way through the rugged backcountry of the George Inlet Fjords, culminating at the remote and stunning Mahoney Lake and Mahoney Falls.

Private transportation departs from the cruise ship dock, taking the scenic route to White River base camp. En route, the driver-guide shares entertaining stories about Ketchikan’s colorful history — from the legacy of the Ward Cove Pulp Mill to modern-day community highlights. At base camp, guests meet the UTV Leader for a full driving orientation and gear-up session before heading single-file up the mountainside. Several stops along the way offer outstanding scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities.
