Rainy Day Getaway

Kayak, Kayaking, Knudson Cove
Enjoying a misty morning in Ketchikan's Knudson Cove on a kayak.

It rains a bit in Ketchikan… say between 140 and 160 inches per year. The bulk of the rain comes more in the fall and winter months, but, it’s not uncommon to see some sprinkles, or even showers, in the spring and summer. But, don’t let the rain keep you from exploring K-town, you can find cover at these downtown attractions and as a bonus you’ll get a little cardio running from your car to their front doors:

Main Street Gallery
330 Main Street, Ketchikan, AK 99901 (907) 225-2211 (website)

Tongass Historical Museum
629 Dock Street, Ketchikan AK 99901 (907) 225-5600 (website)

Totem Heritage Center
601 Deermount Street, Ketchikan, AK 99901 (907) 225-5900 (website)

For those seeking more rainy day adventure, you can find shelter under the canopy of the Tongass National Forest. Those big beautiful trees soak up the rain while you enjoy a nice walk or hike through the forest floor. You won’t stay completely dry, but it’s the next best thing. Here’s my favorite hiking trails from the north to sound end of Revillagigedo Island Island:

Settlers Cove State Recreation Site
18000 N Tongass Hwy, Ketchikan, AK 99901 (907) 247-8574

Totem Bight State Park
9883 N Tongass Hwy, Ketchikan, AK 99091 (907) 247-8574

Rainbird Trail
2600 7th Ave, Ketchikan, AK 99901

The Whitman Creek Trail
8204-11730 S Tongass Hwy, Ketchikan, AK 99901

For the extreme, go kayaking…you’re wet anyway, right? Knudson Cove Marina rents kayaks for 2-hour self-guided tours — $25 for singles and $40 for doubles.
